Locals in Dali, China, shop for food, carrying goods in baskets on their backs. Locally-grown rice, wheat, vegetables, and tobacco are brought weekly to the Monday market in the village of Shaping. Yunnan province as a whole maintains a strong agricultural industry, with crops making up a significant percentage of provincial GDP. The market was unusually busy in advance of Chinese New Year, when most Chinese families gather—often travelling long distances—to cook and eat together on New Year’s Eve.
