Help the RCC Translate the Anthropocene!

The RCC is putting together a major exhibition on the Anthropocene at the Deutsches Museum. The opening display will contain a number of quotes about the Anthropocene from major scholars. We would like to display these quotes in as many languages as possible. So if you are a native speaker of a language other than English or German – especially a less common language! – we would greatly appreciate it if you could translate some or all of the quotes below. Please leave your translations in the comments, or email blog@carsoncenter.lmu.de. Please number the quotations and indicate what language you have translated into. Thank you!

1) “We are changing Earth more rapidly than we are understanding it.” (Peter Vitousek, Ecologist)

2) “Humans have changed the way the world works. Now they have to change the way they think about it, too.” (The Economist)

3) “We’re all in the Anthropocene, but we are not in it in the same way.” (Rob Nixon, Professor of English)

4) “We’ve pushed the Earth down into a different trouser leg of time and it will evolve differently than if we had not appeared.” (Jan Zalasiewicz, Geologist)

[Note: “trouser leg of time” is a Terry Pratchett reference. This is a way of describing what happens when a decision is made and thus produces alternate universes (ones in which the decision was made differently.)]

5) “Can Technology save the Planet?” (Bruce Sterling, Science-Fiction Author)

6) “It’s no longer us against nature. Instead, it’s we who decide what nature is and what it will be.” (Paul Crutzen, Atmospheric Chemist and Nobel Prize Laureate)

7) “We are at the Cambrian explosion of technology, and we are at the perfect point in time to gather the fossils as they are being made and discarded.” (Richard Benson, Photographer and Printer)
